A couple weeks ago I was in a meeting at the school I work for part-time. We were gearing up for students returning when I noted one teacher’s optimistic reply to the introduction of a dozen new procedures. She made a motion of waves with her hand, and said “We’re just riding the waves.” I really appreciated that sentiment and have since repeated it to almost everyone I know.
Last week at Cole’s Senior Portrait session in Kalamazoo, I was asking him the standard questions you ask when you’re getting to know someone his age...
I noted his plans for returning to in-person learning for the school year, his enthusiasm for international travel, the Spanish language, and working in the culinary arts. We explored Western’s east campus for his photos and then made it downtown to finish up at the Kalamazoo Mall. Throughout his session I kept getting a strong sense of his natural ability to adapt to the changing world around him and his willingness to go with the flow (or ride the waves).
I've noticed that folks with a rather easy going nature like Cole here have been thriving a bit more than others lately. I say this as someone who thought they were easy going and have since come to realize they are actually more into making plans and knowing things about the future so they can plan to adapt to them. Ha! I may have been fooling myself this whole time. And yes, I did make Cole stand in the street for the shot above, but the light was red and his mom was surely keeping an eye on the traffic from the sidewalk. : )
Well folks, it’s my sincere hope that we can all keep learning to adapt to the future we don’t know much about, and in the meantime try our best to ride the waves while looking amazing in our senior pictures! Cole's senior session features his wavy locks of hair, of which he has not cut in a good long time thank you and probably won't anytime soon. : )
